1873: Charles Mahnken was mentioned in the story of the wretched death of Jacob Knoop who had died alone and had his corpse eaten by his dog. "Lager beer saloon keeper", Charles Mahnken, at the corner of Williams and Van Brunt, had signed a note for Knopp. He said he had known Knoop for about 8 years. See Knoop

1884: In September 1884, three sailors off the schooner D. K. Baker were taken ill. One died. The other two were taken to St. Mary's hospital. The had been staying i hired rooms at 293 Van Brunt. The men were suffering from asthenia (lack of energy) and fever. The vessel and the house were fumigated.
