1871 Peter Schwaneman, a grocer, doing business at the corner of Partition and Van Brunt sued for $2,000 in damages from Henry Reiter. At the "capitulation of Paris" Schwaneman was so overjoyed that he hung a German flag from his establishment. His neighbor, Henry Reiter, being a French sympathizer cut down the flag and bunting and threw it in the street where it was torn to pieces by some young boys.

Schwaneman moved to Manhattan between 1871 and 1880.

1875: Did not find in Brooklyn in 1875.
