William Devan was born in Massachusetts circa 1830. He married Mary Shea born circa 1835. She had a brother Daniel born in Ireland circa 1844. William and Mary had Ann in 1854 who married Dennis Costello and Cornelius in 1861 who married twice and had several children. William was a boat man/seaman who later had a liquor store on Conover at Elizabeth. William died in 1877 leaving Mary with three children, ages 24 (married), 19 and 14.

The 1886 map shows a frame building at 252 Conover - three in from Elizabeth on the west side of Conover.

December 1870 - Daniel Shea, while under the influence "of Holiday benzine" called on his sister, Mrs Devan, living at the corner of Conover and Elizabeth, Red Hook. Shea was so obnoxious that Mrs. Devan threw him out. In return he smashed the side lights of the door. He was arrested.

1874- November - Cornelius Devan, age 14, and companion were arrested for stealing $10 worth of iron bolts from the shipyard of Howard Burtis.

1877: Death of William Devan

Probate: Mary widow of William Devan died 16 February 1877, three children, Anne wife of Dennis Costello, Cornelius Devan, age sixteen, Sarah age 10.

How did Mary Devan support herself and her children after the death of William in 1877?

1879- August - Cornelius Devan age 19, of 252 Conover and a friend were arrested after being caught carrying off several bags of cotton from the New York warehouse company's stores at the foot of Van Brunt. They had entered the warehouse by forcing the doors.

October 1879 - Mary "Doran" of 353 Conover Street charged William Ward of having pointed a revolver at her and threatened to shoot her.
