In May 1885 Edward Meyer's liquor saloon on the Middle Pier of the Atlantic dock was seized by US Marshall Tote. "Meyer was arrested for non payment of the wholesale liquor dealer's special taxes and his place raided." Among the things seized was a number of cigars that were not properly boxed and stamped. Meyer's bail was $1,000.

1889: Edward Meyers a saloonkeeper at Conover and India Wharf was arrested for violating the Excise law and selling liquor on Sunday. Officers entered through a side door and found a half dozen men playing cards.
