1883, April, the liquor store at "233 Van Brunt" was owned by George W. Balfe when it was robbed of $10, two bottles of wine and a box of cigars.

In 1884 George W Balfe was among a group of 16 Brooklyn Liquor dealers who signed an agreement to organize against the "persecutions of the fanatical" and to protect their rights "as citizens, taxpayers and tradesmen." There was discussion of of enforcing the Sunday closing laws, but some dealers (especially the smaller ones) stated that Sunday was their best day.
