Note: John Bell married Elizabeth (born circa 1838). Elizabeth Bell ran the boarding house restaurant as indicated in the 1880 census and the 1885, 1886 city directories.

124 Elisabeth is shown on the 1886 map as a wood house on the north side of Elizabeth between Van Brunt and Richards close to the Brooklyn Fire Brick works. I believe that it is the building advertised in November 1854 to March 1855: "a commodious three story frame house on Elizabeth st, sixth house south of Van Brunt Red Hook Point, well adapted for a Boarding House or private residence. Rent low." TO LET

1880 census: 402 Van Brunt, Bell, John age 37 (should be 47), engineer, born England, Eliza wife age 47, boarding house, Renfew son 19 on steamer, Eliza daughter age 15, and 12 boarders. All men - with jobs like machinist, blacksmith, carpenter.

In 1888 three cases of smallpox were removed from 334 Van Brunt.
402 Van Brunt:
In 1875 402 Van Brunt was listed as a two story and basement residence eight rooms full lot, rent $400. In 1882 402 Van Brunt was a polling place. In 1900, 1901 and 1902 402 Van Brunt (near Coffey) was a four story brick apartment house with a store on the first floor and flats above - lot 25x100, sold for $7,900 in 1900.
