Kassenbrock, (Kossenbrock), Christopher, (1818-1873), Hanover, Germany, 239 and/or 294 Van Brunt, grocer/liquor Ellen Kassenbrock born 1833 Ireland

On the 1870 Brooklyn Eagle liquor dealer list, Kasserbrock, C. 239 Van Brunt.

Christopher Kassenbrock was born in Hanover Germany circa 1818. He immigrated to the US sometime before 1844. He lived in Manhattan where he worked as a barber, married and had at least four children. His first wife died before 1855 leaving him with four children ages 3 to 13. By 1860 he had remarried and had another six children, some of whom died as children. The family moved to Red Hook Brooklyn where Christopher had a saloon/grocery store at 294 Van Brunt. Christopher died in 1873. His widow, Ellin Cronin Kassenbrock (born in Ireland circa 1832), ran the business after his death until at least 1886. Ellen Kassenbrock died in 1915. Ellen Kassenbrock made her mark at her naturalization in 1884.

While the 1870 list gives the address as 239 Van Brunt I think it is a misprint and should have been 294 Van Brunt. 239 was shown as a small brick building on the east side of Van Brunt between Delevan and Verons on the 1886 map. Kassenbrock's grocery was at 294 Van Brunt - opposite Tremont - a brick building that is identified as a grocery store in several records.

Walter and Vincent Kassenbrock, both teachers, were active member so the Bay Ridge community. They were opposed to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

Both Kassenbrock brothers, respected teachers in the local school system, joined with the late Gerry Shea, who headed the main anti-bridge group, the Save Bay Ridge Committee. But once the final legislation was enacted, enabling construction to go ahead, Walter and Vincent - and a handful of other leaders - decided that the best way to preserve "what was left" of Bay Ridge was to form the community council.

    Brooklyn Eagle January 14, 2013

The Council is still an active and an important part of Bay Ridge organization and political action. Kassenbrock Brothers Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in 1972.

Walter has a son, Bob Kassenbrock.
