A Study of Red Hook Liquor Stores, Bars, Saloons and Restaurants mid to late 1800s

In 1870 the Brooklyn Eagle published a list of people who received licenses to sell liquor. This list is divided into sections: VAN VRUNT, HAMILTON, DIKEMAN, CONOVER and MISCELLANEOUS. There were the following number of venders listed for each section:

  1. Van Brunt 29 (From Hamilton Ave to the Erie Basin)
  2. Hamilton 21 (From the Gowanus canal to the East River)
  3. Dikeman 6 (From the East River to Richards street)
  4. Conover 11 (From William (now Pioneer) to the Erie Basin)
  5. Miscellaneous 44 (Including the cross streets: Williams (Pioneer, King, Sullivan, Wolcott, Dikeman, Partition (Coffey), VanDyke and Elizabeth (Beard), etc)
  6. Court Street 13
There were a total of 124 venders listed - although some of these were duplicates. Some of the Miscellaneous were actually on Van Brunt, Hamilton, Dikeman and Conover so my final arrangement does not reflect the 1870 breakdown. I did not look at the establishments on Court Street.

The 1870 list is problematic for several reasons: misspellings, duplications and just plain old errors. I can find no other information in directories, censuses, newspapers for quite a number of the listings. However, it is a basic indication of how many liquor venders there were and their locations (more or less). Using the liquor list as a basis I tried to determine the location of the store and follow the various proprietors up to 1900 (not always with much success).

Around 1870 there appears to have been a renumbering of the addresses in Red Hook. An addition address problem is, I believe, due to misprints. While it might apear that a given person moved from number 112 to number 113 I do not think that was what was actually happening in most cases. In some instances a difference in address may reflect a home versus business address (or two business addresses). And in some cases people actually did move.

Some people held licences for more than one address.

The basic information for the following lists of liquor stores in Red Hook was taken from:

  1. The Brooklyn Eagle list of BROOKLYN LIQUOR DEALERS "sellers of popular beverages in the third precinct", 1870.

  2. The 1870 Brooklyn directory. One could be listed in two ways:

    1. By last name in the general directory

    2. By last name under the category "Liquor"

  3. The 1870 census. I browsed the census and pulled out anybody listed with a liquor, beer or grocery connection.

Additional information was taken from other censuses, directories, NYC death index, NYC brides index, NYC grooms index, LDS indexes, Brooklyn baptisms and other records available on Ancestry.com, Columbia University online library of real estate information, the Brooklyn Eagle, other news papers and more.

However he does not seemed to have actually run a liquor store or saloon. He was actually a cooper by trade and a politician by avocation. If he maintained the liquor licence it is highly likely that he had a "bartender".

While the 1870 list gives the address as 239 Van Brunt I think it is a misprint and should have been 294 Van Brunt. 239 was shown as a small brick building on the east side of Van Brunt between Delevan and Verons on the 1886 map. Kassenbrock's grocery was at 294 Van Brunt - opposite Tremont - a brick building that is identified as a grocery store in several records.
