Home - Goehle Introduction - Catherine Furst Schwarzmeier Lindemann - Schwarzmeier - Julius Lindemann - Peter Goehle

The date of Minnie's birth is listed in various records as occuring in September between the years 1860 and 1863. On her death record and her obit her date of birth was listed as September 8, 1861.

WHAT IS MINNIE'S DATE OF BIRTH AND WHO WERE HER PARENTS?

The records that I have found so far that give a date of birth for Minnie are:

  1. At her marriage to Peter Goehle in January 1889, Minnie was listed as Wilhemina Lindemann, the daughter of Julius Lindemann and Catherine Furst. Her "age at next birthday" was listed as 26. If this is true, it means she was born in 1863.

  2. In the 1870 US census where she was listed with Catherine Lindemann, age 37 and Katy Lindemann, age 4, Minnie was listed as being 7 years old.
    Notes:
    • Based on the month the census was taken and a birthday in September, this would give a birth year of 1862 for Minnie.
    • Catherine's age was not correct. She should have been listed as 39 years old.
    • Katy's age was correct.
    • Census records are not reliable for age information.
  3. In the 1880 US census where she was listed with Kate Lindemann, 48 and Katherine, age 15, Minnie was listed as Amelia, age 17.
    Notes:
    • Based on the month the census was taken and a birthday in September, this would give a birth year of 1862 for Minnie.
    • Kate's age was more or less correct.
    • Katherine's age was more or less correct.
  4. At the birth of her daughter, Wilhemina, in December 1889 Minnie was listed as Wilhelmina Lindemann Goehle, age 28. This would mean she was born in 1861.
  5. In the New York City police census of 1890 she was listed as Minnie age 29. This would give a birth year of 1861.
  6. At the birth of her son, Frank, in March 1894, Minnie was listed as Minnie Lindemann, age 32. This would mean she was born in 1862.
  7. At the birth of her daughter, Margaret, in April 1897, Minnie was listed as Minna Lindemann age 37. This means she was born in 1860.
  8. At the birth of her daughter, Lena (Rose), in October 1899 Minnie was listed as Minnie Lindemann, age 39. This would mean she was born in 1860.
  9. In the 1900 US census she was listed as Minnie, born, September 1860, age 39.
  10. In the 1910 US census she was listed as Minnie, born, age 48.
  11. This would give a birth year of 1862. Note: The census was taken before September when she would have turned 49.

  12. In the 1920 census she was listed as Minnie, age 57. This would give a birth year of 1862. Note: The census was taken before September when she would have turned 58
  13. Minnie's death certificate lists her birth as September 8, 1861 , her father, "Schwartzmann", born in Germany, and her mother, unknown. The person who provided the information was Richard Gilmartin. In 1940 Richard Gilmartin was the town clerk for the town of East Hampton.

The earlies year of her birth was 1860. The latest year listed for her birth is 1863. Catherine and Julius were married in April 1863.

It is not possible that Minnie was born five months after the marriage of Julius and Catherine because they had another daughter born in February 1864. There are only 5 months between September 1863 and February 1864. Therefore it is almost certain Minnie was born in 1862 (or earlier) and that she was the daughter of Catherine and her first husband, _____ Schwar(t)zmeyer. There is the possibility that she was the daughter of Julius Lindemann and his first wife. However, Julius's first wife was born circa 1817/18 and she would have been past 40 at the time of Minnie's birth. Not impossible, but highly unlikely since she does not appear to have had other children. In addition there is the notation at Minnie's death that her father's name was" Schwartzmann".

When a birth month was listed for Minnie it was always September.

Catherine Furst and _____ Schwarzmeier (Schwar[t]zme[y][i]er)

Catherine was listed at the time of her marriage to Julius Lindemann in 1863 as, Catherine Schwarzmeier, nee Furst.

I have found very few records for the name Schwarzmeier (with any variation of spelling). I have not found a marriage or the birth of any children of Catherine Furst and ____ Schwarzmeier.

For more information on the Schwarzmeiers in New York City see Schwarzmeier.

The only death record for Schwarzmeier that I found in the New York City Archives was for Michael Schwarzemaior, age 31, 4 months and 8 days, born in Germany, address 604 4th Street died on May 21, 1862. Cause of death euthentis(?). Buried in the Lutheran Cemetery. The writing on this record is bad and I am unsure of the spelling of the last part of the name. However, there are no other names that start "Schwarzm---". The Lutheran Cemetery had the listing under Schwarzemaior.

In reply to my request of August 22, 2001 on the burial information of Michael Schwarzemaior the Lutheran Cemetery wrote:

"The information we have regarding Michael Schwarzemanier 31 years old. Address not given to us. Location Public 1E Map 2, Row 2 Grave 33. The only burial in this lot."

Death registration was not required by New York City until 1890, so there is the possiblity of unrecorded deaths.

Michael seems like a likely person to have been the first husband of Catherine Furst. He was the right age and he died at the right time.

Julius Lindemann and His First Wife, Amelia

Julius Lindemann's first wife was Amelia. According to the New York City death records, Amelia Lindemann died on July 29, 1862, age 46, 135 Avenue A, cause of death, carcinoma, buried, Lutheran cemetery. This record is in ledger book form.

Julius was listed with his wife in the 1860 federal census in New York City. There were no children listed with them. If they had any children, they had either died before 1860 or were born between the time of the census and July 1862 when Amelia Lindemann died. She was 46 years old at the time of her death; it seems unlikely that she would have had a child between 1860 and 1862. However, this cannot be completely ruled out.

For more information on the Julius Lindemann in New York City see Julius Lindemann.

Julius Lindemann and Catherine Furst

According to the records of the Rivington German Presbyterian Church:

Julius Lindemann, widow, born November 2, 1820, Bettmar, Braunschweig, married Catherine Schwarzmeier, nee Furst, born November 4, 1831 in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, address 133 Avenue A, on April 28, 1863, witnesses, Carl Nethel (no address) and L.T.L. Furst, 27 Christie Street.

Julius and Catherine had two children baptized in the Rivington German Presbyterian Church:

  1. Elizabeth Lindemann born February 23, 1864, daughter of Julius Lindemann of Bettmar, Braunschweig, and Catherine, nee Furst, of Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, was baptized April 10, 1864 at the Rivington German Presbyterian Church, address 487 ?, sponsor, Elizabeth Distel.

According to the New York City Death records, Eliza Lindemann, age 1 year 1 month, died of "hydrocefahalus" on January 22, 1865, address 216 2nd Avenue. She was buried in Lutheran Cemetery.

  2. Sophia Cath. Lindemann born February 7, 1866, the daughter of Julius Lindermann of Bettmar, Braunschweig, and Catherine nee Furst, born Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, was baptized on April 8, 1866, address 216 2 Ave., at the Rivington German Presbyterian Church, sponsor, Sophia Furst.

Note: I did not find the marriage or the births recorded in the civil records. It was not required to report marriages and births in New York City until 1900.

Conclusion on the Parents of Minnie Schwarzmeier Lindemann Goehle

Since Catherine and Julius were married in April 1863 and had a daughter in February 1864, they could not have had a daughter in September of 1863. It is almost certain that Minnie was the daughter of Catherine Furst and her first husband, ______ Schwarzmeier. There is, however, the slim possibility that she was the daughter of Julius Lindemann and his first wife.

I have not been able to find a birth record for Minnie either under the name Schwartzmeier or Lindemann. Unrecorded births in NYC were common before the early 1900s.
