Heffernan in the US West:
Mary Louise Heffernan Driscoll repeatedly indicates she was born in the State of Washington circa 1886.
The family was in New Jersey by 1887. Birth and death records on line for the state of
Washington start in 1891 - too late. I cannot find anything concrete on them in
either Washington or California.
Jersey City: The Heffernans were in Jersey City New Jersey by the birth of
William✟ in 1887. William died in New Jersey in 1888.
Children:
William Heffernan and Elizabeth Slaven had four children who survived to adulthood, married
and had families:
Mary Louise born 1886 state of Washington,
Michael George 1889, Jersey City, N. J., Elizabeth born 1890, Jersey City, N. J. and
Catherine (Katherine) born 1893, Jersey City, N. J.

This is the story of a good man, a man who did his damnedest every day of his life.
Thomas Heffernan Connolly, born on January 5, 1920, inherited grit, intelligence and good
looks from his Irish ancestors. He grew up in Jersey City, NJ. His ancestors were explorers,
engineers, horsemen, doctors and shop owners. The women were high-strung, elegant
and devoted themselves to their families through war and depression. At the age of 5,
Tom lost his father in 1925 to injuries as a military pilot. As an only child, his
"Grandpa Heffernan", his Aunt Beth and his very determined mother Katherine Connolly raised Tom.
Another Uncle Tom helped filling in as a father as the Irish Catholic community took care
of its own. After Uncle Tom came the leadership of Father Ballinger from the local Catholic Church.
Father Ballinger would become a lifelong friend and cross paths in the Pacific Ocean
during WWII. After the war Fr. Ballinger would return to marry Helen and Tom.
Tom grew up at 288 Union St., Jersey City, in a house built by Grandpa Heffernan.
His mother and Aunt Beth agreed that he was not to play on the street with the neighborhood kids.
Instead they taught him to be self-sufficient and competent, working quietly on his own.
They took him to the library, where his favorite books were about history. Tom would spend
many Saturdays in his home, reading, building models, and listening to music on the radio.
His family gifted him a record now and then, adding to his large collection of 78's.
Tom's appreciation for music, especially opera and musicals, enhanced a beautiful tenor
voice himself. He had nimble hands and could fix anything. His workbench was always kept
in complete order. He said he would have liked to have been a doctor, he also wished he
could play a musical instrument. But considering the family's poverty, it is a miracle Tom
got through St. Peter's College, in Jersey City by riding his bike to and from classes and working.
The "sisters" (Aunt Beth and his mother Katherine) started him to work at 13 doing custodial
work at the YMCA at night. He delivered eggs by day on the bicycle he received from his
Uncle Tom. Together, Tom and his mother would stand in the dark basement and would "candle"
each of the 60 dozen eggs that he was to sell each week. Just about all his earnings were
saved and only once did the bike fall over! He attended Snyder High School and was
captain of the track team in a school with several thousand students. He was a gifted
young man, but he would never boast or flaunt his talents and remained humble.
He would consistently run the quarter mile in 48- 49 seconds or better!
During his college years, Tom continued to hold two jobs, one at Sears in Union City
and the other at the Borden's Company in NYC in the mail room. By the time he left Borden's
after three years, he was assistant superintendent of the pasteurizing plant in Newark,
where he began work at 2 a.m. He took the subway to Journal Square for 5 cents and then the "tubes"
into NYC or the bus to Newark to work. He returned in time for chemistry lab at St. Peter's
in the late
afternoon. When Tom graduated in 1942, he and the two "sisters" had won against the odds in
raising an only child in the city.
After graduation he met his future wife, Helen Willis. Tom was drafted in 1943 for World War II.
He wanted to fly as his father had, but "the sisters" couldn't risk losing him as his
father had been lost. So he joined the Navy and would say "We were all going.
I figured that if you were going to die, one way was as bad as another. In the meantime,
I figured I had a hot cup of coffee and a bunk to sleep in." He proved his mettle as the
quartermaster and helmsman, on a minesweeper. Minesweepers prepared the way for the
larger ships for battles at sea. Mine Sweepers were always the first into dangerous waters.
His ship was the U.S.S. Pilot, an Auk class minesweeper laid down on 27 October 1941 by the
Pennsylvania Shipyards in Beaumont, Texas. The ship was 221 feet long, had a 32-foot beam,
a draft of 10 feet 9 inches, and a speed of only 18 knots, with a full crew of officers
and sailors. The Pilot mounted a 3-inch dual-purpose gun, two 40-mm, two 20-mm
antiaircraft guns, five depth charge launchers and two depth charge racks.
Tom navigated the way into the Pacific Theatre to Saipan, New Guinea, China,
over the China Sea and past Guam. His contingent started with approximately
25 mine sweepers in "V" formation clearing the entrances to Hong Kong and the
Yangtze River. Tom recollected ending up with fewer than 15 Mine sweepers.
The Pilot was one of the first American sea vessels to enter Formosa, which is now Taiwan.
The Pilot was assigned to sweep the island of Kyushu for the tentative invasion of Japan
when the second atomic bomb was dropped. Once the center of the Japanese Catholic Church,
The Pilot landed at Nagasaki just days after the atomic bomb was dropped, witnesses to
the devastation of the city also famous as the setting for "Madame Butterfly" by Puccini.
"At 21 I was the oldest, so the captain asked me to go ashore and take a look around. He gave
me a sidearm and a bosun's mate and I took a launch into shore. There wasn't much left standing.
One of the only remaining buildings was a little stone church. There was a Jesuit priest and
I went in and we talked. After that, I returned to the ship."
Of the Japanese, "They didn't bother us much in Nagasaki, they were all in shock."
But beyond that he never talked about it until about 85 years old. It was too hard to
think about all the lost crew mates, other minesweepers blown up clearing path's for battle
ships and the darkness of war. When he did recall and speak of the WWII years, his
voice would choke, eye's swell and tears would come easy. His missed so many buddies.
The end of the war saw him arrive home alive and marry his sweetheart, Helen Marie Willis
on September 7, 1946. Tom was invited to work at the W.E. Willis Co. a varied marine products
distributor downtown in NYC. When the business burned a few years later, he began his
own business manufacturing stoves for boats, but had to give it up after a white
gas tank exploded and badly burned his hand. Besides, by then there were six children
in the family, living in a pretty little colonial on Owen Ave in Radburn, NJ.
He had been avoiding traveling and selling marine equipment as a manufacturer's rep
because he didn't want to leave the family, but now he had no choice. When the last
of six children was born in a span of 7 years he went on the road at age 35 selling
for straight commission. Four boys and two girls and Helen made the family. Soon more
factories learned of his growing reputation of his integrity as a quiet and honest salesman.
His philosophy was telling the truth, never to sell the dealers anything they couldn't use,
or too much of what he sold. Just about every Monday morning, the red rear lights of his car
would fade into the dark morning hours, and every Friday evening around dinner time, we
would hear his heavy steps come through the door, tired but happy to be home.
He would drive over 50,000 mile per year for many years to feed the family and grow
the business. These were hard miles driven before the "new" interstate highway system.
There were times during those early years when he slept in the car, and ate baby food out
of a jar, to save on travel expenses. One night, without a single cent in his pocket, he
used stamps to purchase the gas he needed to continue his work. He had it down to a science,
bringing every penny home. His integrity and hard work grew that single job into
Thomas H. Connolly & Sons Inc. Currently this multi-million dollar company is owned by
Paul & David Connolly and two other partners who have grown it three fold.
It is the first and oldest Marine Manufacturers' Sales agency in America. It is nationally
known and highly respected for integrity.
Tom also found time to umpire his children's games, go on picnics to Ringwood Manor at "all"
times of the year and cook out. He was a member of the Franklin Lakes Planning Board.
His favorite place was a small 100 year old cottage on Lake Winnipesauke, NH where the family
has vacationed for over 53 years. It is now enjoyed by Helen and Tom's children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
At age sixty, Tom finally realized one of his dreams: to sail his own boat. For ten years,
he and Helen sailed the "Tiche Ma' Croix" out of Essex Island, Connecticut, a tiny
reward for a life of hard work. But if you asked him, he would say that he always had his
reward in his wife, and in his six children. His great pride is his legacy of six
married children and 21 grandchildren, five of them adopted and five great grandchildren.
Surviving family are: Dr. Helen "Sue" Watt married to Dr. William Watt, live in Andover, Mass.
with three grown children. Dr. Tom Connolly is married to Katherine Watters Connolly,
in Burlington, VT., six children and three grandchildren. Kate Connolly Chepucavage,
RN, is married to Peter Chepucavage Esq., Washington, DC with
two children and two grandchildren. Dr. Chris Connolly is married to Susan
Connolly CPA, Cherry Hill, NJ with four children. Paul Connolly is married
to Rita Connolly, Easton, Md., with three children. David Connolly is
married to Mary Connolly, RN, with three children; Wyckoff NJ., All of Tom's and Helen's
children are married to their original spouses whose values are set on firm ground
of a long lasting Irish-Dutch marriage.
