WALSH/LANGAN INTRODUCTION - HOME PAGE

The Farraghers Connected to the Langans

Mathias Langan

My ancestor Mathias Langan was closely associated with several Faraghers.

  • Mathias Langan was the sponsor, with Peggy Faragher, of Peggy, the daughter of Martin Farragher and Ellen Curran, on May 5, 1862.
  • Mathias Langan was a sponsor, with Kate Farragher, of Kate, the daughter of Martin Farracher and Ellen Curran of Cloongowla West, on May 25, 1863.
  • Mathias Langan was the sponsor, with Sarah Haveran, of Mary, the daughter of James Biggins and Bridget Farracher of Ballinrobe, on August 16, 1871.
  • Mathias Langan was the sponsor, with Bridget Tarpey, of Sara, the daughter of Thomas Farragher and Margaret Lawley (?) on October 27, 1885.
  • Martin Farragher (Farrecher) was the sponsor for Pat, the son of Mathias and Penolope Langan in 1866
  • Martin Farragher was the sponsor for James the son of Mathias and Penolope Langan in 1877. Martin's wife, Ellen Faragher, was the female sponsor of James.
Bridget Langan Feerick

Mathias Langan's sister Bridget Langan Feerick had only one Farragher connection:

  1. Thomas Farragher was the sponsor to Bridget Langan Feerick's son, Stephen, in 1863.

Pat Langan

Mathias and Bridget's brother Pat Langan had no connections with the Farraghers.

Farragher in Ballinrobe Parish

Farragher was a relatively common name in the Ballinrobe Parish records.

Based on the parish records it would appear that there were three Farraghers connected with the Langans. Their parents are unknown.

  1. Martin Farragher, born circa 1821.
  2. Mary Farragher, born no later than 1831. She could, of course, have been the wife of a Farragher and not born a Farragher.
  3. Thomas Farragher, born no later than 1843.
The Farraghers who had connections to the Langans lived in Carrownalecka and in Cloongowla.

Martin Farragher (c.1821-?) Cloongowla and Ellen Curren

Birth: 1821, based on the 1901 census in Ballinrobe. This makes him a contemporary of Mathias's mother, Margaret Langan. It is possible that Martin Farragher was the brother of Margaret ____ Langan.

Residence: Carrownalecka and Cloongowla

Occuaption: Farmer

Marriage: Martin "Ferecher" (Farragher) married Ellen Curren in "Carrunalecka" on March 2, 1851. The witnesses were Michael Stanton and Mary Faracher.

Note: At the time of their marriage in 1851, Martin Faragher and Ellen Curren were living in Carrownalecka. By the time of the birth of their daughter, Cicily, in 1854, they were in Cloongowla. They were in Cloongowla until at least the birth of Martin in 1865. When there son, Patrick was born in 1870, they were back in Carrownalecka. This indicates a connection between either the Farraghers or the Currans in Cloongowla.

Children: There was probably a child born to Martin Faragher and Ellen Curran between their marriage in 1851 and the birth of Cicily in 1854. Most likely, there was at least one other child and possibly two other children, besides Thomas, born to them during the period of the missing records (1856 to 1861). They had at least the following children:

  1. Cicily, of Martin "Faraher" and Nel Curreen of Cloongowla, October, 23, 1854, sponsors Michael Curren and Kitty Faraher.
  2. Thomas, born circa 1858. This was a period when the records are missing for Ballinrobe parish.
1901 Census: He was listed in the 1901 Census.
  3. Peggy, the daughter of Martin Farragher and Ellen Curran, was baptized on May 5, 1862. The sponsors were Mathias Langan and Peggy Faragher. Peggy Farracher was either the wife of Thomas Farracher or a sister of Martin Farragher.
Note: Peggy is a nickname for Margaret.
  4. Kate, the daughter of Martin Farracher and Ellen "Do a Curran" of Cloongowla West, was baptized on May 25, 1863. The sponsors were Mathias Langan and Kate Farragher.
  5. Martin, of Martin Faracher and Ellen Curran, was baptized on June 27, 1865. The sponsor was Bridget Hession. There was no male sponsor listed. The civil records listed Martin as a farmer in Cloongowla and the birth as August 21, 1865.
  6. Five-year break during which there are no other children listed for Martin Farragher and Ellen Curran.

  7. Pat, of Martin Faracher and Ellen Curreen of Cloongowla, sponsors Thomas Faracher and Ellen Galloway, March 12, 1870. According to the civil birth registration, Martin Faragher, Carrownalecka farmer, and Ellen Curran, had a son, Patrick on May 5, 1870.

The 1901 census in Ballinrobe:

  • Martin Farragher, age 80, cannot read or write, farmer, widower, Irish/English speaker
  • His son, Thomas, age 43, read and write, farmer's son, not married, Irish/English speaker.
As a sponsor: The parish records indicate that there were at least three other Martin Farraghers in the parish, consequently it cannot be certain that himself was the Martin Farragher listed as a sponsor below.

In addition to being a sponsor to the children of Mathias Langan, Martin Farragher was a sponsor to:

  1. With Peggy Murphy for Michael, of Michael and Peggy Moran of "Clogher".
  2. For Martin, of Michael Philben and Patricia Feerick, in 1875.

Other Records:

The cover pages of A Chronicle of Ballinrobe contain a copy of part of the front page of the Ballinrobe Chronicle published on Saturday, April 11, 1868. " Murtagh" Farragher was listed in two articles as a member of the Board of Guardians of the Union of Ballinrobe. The other members were Robert Tighe, Charles H. Knox, William Burke, Thomas Tighe, Christopher Bowen, John Hearne, Garrett Nally, and Nicholas Walsh. Again, I do not know which Martin Farragher this was. However, it is highly unlikely that it was the illiterate relative of Mathias Langan. See Other Matin Farraghers below.

Bridget Farragher and James Biggins

Mathias Langan was the sponsor for one of the children of Bridget Farragher Biggins.

Birth: 1851, based on an age of twenty years at the time of her first known child. It is possible that Bridget Farragher was the daughter of Martin Farragher.

Marriage: Unknown

Children: Bridget Farragher and James Biggins had:

  1. Mary, the daughter of James Biggins and Bridget Farracher of Ballinrobe, was baptized on August 16, 1871. The sponsors were Mathias Langan and Sarah Haveran.
  2. William, of James Biggins and Bridget Farragher, baptized on November 24, 1873, sponsors John Hyland and Mary Moran.

Thomas Farragher and Margaret in Cahernalecka

This Thomas Farragher does not seem to have been the son of Martin Farragher who was as "unmarried" not widowed in the 1901 census.

Marriage: Unknown. Margaret Lawley

Children: Thomas and Margaret Farragher of Cahernalecka had:

  1. Bridget of Thomas Faragher and Margaret, Thomas Larner and Mary Faragher, December 15, 1877, Cahernaleca,
  2. Mary of Thomas and Margaret Farragher, Martin Faragher and Sarah Ganley (?), August 17, 1879, No place
  3. Sara of Thomas Farragher and Margaret Lawley, Mathias Langan and Bridget Tarpey, October 27, 1885
Connections
  • The common Cahernalecka address
  • Martin Farragher was a sponsor for Thomas Farragher's daughter, Mary, in 1879
  • Thomas Farragher was a sponsor for Pat the son of Martin Farragher in 1870
  • Thomas Farragher was a sponsor for Stephen of Bridget Langan Ferrick in 1863
  • Mathias Langan was a sponsor for Thomas Farragher's daughter, Sara, in1885

However, since Farragher is such a common name and there were other Martins and Toms in the parish, I am not possitive that this is the Thomas Farragher.

Sibby (Cicilia) Farragher and Pat Manion, Cloongawla

Sibby (Cilia) Faragher and Pat Manion, Cloongawla had the following children:

  1. Mary of Pat Mannion and Sibby Faragher, James Faragher and Honor Faragher, March 1, 1862, Cloongowla
  2. Pat of Pat Manion and Sibi Faracher, Thos Curren and Bridget Curren, January 7, 1865, Cloongoola
  3. Bridget of Pat Manion and Siby Farracher, Jas Faracher and Mary Faracher, April 21, 1866, Tool (?)
  4. Peggy of Pat Manion and Sibby Faragher, Pat Farragher and Mary Faragher, January 25, 1868, Cloongowla
  5. Anne of Pat Mannion and Sibby Faragher, Thos Henagh (?) and Anne Faragher, August 14, 1869, Cloongowla
  6. John of Pat Manion and "Celia" Faragher, Pat Faragher and Margaret, April 1(?)5, 1871, Cloongawla
  7. Ellen of Pat Manion and S---- Farragher, Pat and Margaret Faragher, May 30, 1874, No place

Other Martin Farraghers

The record indicate that there were three other Martin Farraghers in the parish:

  1. Martin Farragher and Catherine Hughs

    1. James of Martin Faragher and Catherine Hughes, sponsors, James Farragher and Bridget, August 13, 1848, No place

    2. (?).
    3. Mary, of Martin and Mary Farragher, on November 29, 1855, sponsors Thomas and Mary Glynn.

There may have been other children born to them in the period of the missing records from 1856 to 1861.

Martin Farragher and Catherine Reilly had:

    1. Mary baptized on December 15, 1861, sponsors Tom Millett and Mary Reilly

Marriage: James Faragher, age 21, farmer in "Cahernaloya" no father listed, married Mary Walsh, age 21, of Cloonkerry, father, John Walsh, farmer, on February 16, 1867 (from the civil record). Cloonkerry is at the bottom of Lough Carra.

  2. James Faracher and Margaret Mally were the sponsors on December 1862 of James, of Michael Hughes and Bridget Mally.

Note:

Luke Thornton was the sponsor of two of James Farragher's children. James was the sponsor of one of Luke Thornton's children. Pat Farragher, listed below was a sponsor for one of the children of Luke Thornton. Pat Farragher had Hession Sheridan connections.

These were my great-grandfather's James' parents. The Toole's were from Cloonkerry. They had James in 1855. He married Julia Moran in 1882. James and Julia Toole had my grandfather William Toole in 1884. James was killed "in a skirmish" in 1884 when William was just a month old.
