The Healys In Birstall Parish

The first definite birth record for the Land connected branch of the Healy family in Birstall Parish is that of Abigail in 1688. There is no appropriate birth record for her father, Joshua.

The Name Healey

Healey was an old name in the Birstall/Batley area.

  1. The 1379 poll tax contained two listings for Johanne de Helay in Batley.
  2. The tenent lists for Liveredge manor, in Birstall parish, included:
    • Isabella Halyle in 1592
    • William Heley in 1608
    • Edmond Heley in 1608

The name was also spelt Haley, Haylay, Hayley, Healaugh, Hailey, Halye, Haylow, Heyla, Heyley, Heyle.

George Redmonds in the Yorkshire Surnames Series Part One Bradford and District under Haley says:

" A very common Bradford surname which had its origins in Hipperholme in the 13th century. Although it clearly derives form a place-name, the exact source is not certain for Haley Hill in Northowram appears to be named after the family and Hayley in Oxenhope is not well documented. It may be that the locality was in Hipperholme but that the site was abandoned c1350. From the early spellings the meaning is 'enclosure clearing'. The surname quickly established itself in Overton, just to the north west of Hipperholme, and first occurred in Bradford records in 1327. By the early 1500s there were Haleys in Thornton, and a Richard Haley acquired interests in Little Horton in 1526. The spelling of this period suggests that there may even then been confusion with similar surnames such as Healey"

He lists:

  • 1277 John de Haley (Hipperholme)
  • 1379 Roger de Heyle (Hipperholme) PTY
  • 1379 John de Hala (Overden) PTY
  • 1483 John Halay (Overden) YD
  • 1545-52 Abraham Hailey/Haylay (Bradford) SR;WYR
George Redmonds in the Yorkshire Surnames Series Part Two Huddersfield and District under Healy, Heeley says:
" Locally it is Healey (i.e. high clearing) in Shelly, but the place-name occurs elsewhere, and there are probably other sources of the surname. It has a long hitory in Honley where Heeley became the convention spelling.

He lists:

  • 1309 Adam de Helay (Kirkburton) Wakefield Court Records
  • 1366 Robert de Helay (Shelley Wakefield Court Records
  • 1468 John Helay (Kirkburton) Wakefield Court Rolls
  • 1545 George Heley (Honley) Subsidy Rolls
  • 1593 Peter Helay (Honley) Parish Register

Joshua Healey of Robertown, Liversedge and Littletown and Mary Lilly

Residence

Joshua the father of Abigail lived in Liversedge and/or Liversedge Moreside as indicated by the baptisms of his children.

Birth

No appropriate baptism for any Joshua Healy in the parish records in the mid 1600s.

Since there were plenty of Healys in Liversedge and they appear to have been in Liversedge for some time, it is most likely that Joshua was the son of one of the Liversedge families and that the baptism was not recorded for some reason. Unfortunately, I believe that this was an all too common occurrence.

Marriage

Healys in The Birstall Parish Records

The Healys were, for the most part, listed in township of Liversedge. The hamlets in Liversedge were Blakeup, Eddercliffe, Littletown, Mill Bridge (Milnbrigg), Liversedge Manor, Hightown, Robertown, and Liversedge. Joshua Healy was connected with Long Liversedge. I cannot find "Long Liversedge" on any old maps. However, several of the listings connected with the Healys list either "Long L" or "Hightown in Liversedge", so it is possible that Hightown and Long L were the same. Another designation for the Healy in Liversedge is "Liversedge Moreside".

The record for Birstall Parish start in 1558. The first records for Healy in Birstall parish are the baptisms of the children of Nicholas Hayley in 1572. There are large gaps in the records in 1643-49, 1653-6, and 1678. There are many missing or unreported baptisms, marriages and deaths in the 1660 and 1670s.

The first records in the parish are for Nicholas Hayley in Liversedge
