My great grandfather, Johann Berend Petermann was born in Ganderkesee Germany in 1843. He spent 14 years at sea with the German merchant ships out of Bremen. Subsequently he married and had one child in Germany. The family immigrated to the United States circa 1880 and settled in Hoboken, New Jersey. His parents were Johann Christopher Petermann and Gesche Margrete Engelbart.

Two Osterloh women married into the Engelbart family.

  1. Anna Osterloh born 1685 to Wilke Osterloh and Gebbicke Margarethe Alff married Harmen Engelbart in 1705. Wilke Osterloh born 1655 was the son of Arend Osterloh born 1609 and Grete (unknown).

  2. Catherine Osterloh born 1697 in Immer to Dirk Osterloh and Grete Bremermann, married Cord Menckens in 1724. Cord Menckens and Catherine Osterloh were the parents of Gersche Menkens who married Harmen Wilke Englebart in 1772. Dirk Osterloh was born in Immer in 1641.

      PROBLEM WITH THE RECORDS IN THE FOLLOWING SECTION The last child listed for Arend Osterloh and Ahlke Margarethe Mencken was born in 1755. In 1755 Arend Osterloh (born 1691) would have been 64. Three LDS submissions list Arend Osterloh married to AHLKE MARGARETHE MENCKEN as born in Buerstel circa 1708. WHO COULD THIS AREND OSTERLOH BE? It is unlikely he was a son of Arend Osterloh born 1691. That Arend was only 17 in 1708. Based on an age of 20 at the time of the marriage to Ahlke Mencken he could have been born as late as 1713. There is another Osterloh in Buerstel who is said to have been born circa 1707 - the son of Johann. See below. Buerstel is a small hamlet southwest of the town of Ganderkesee.
