Photo collection of Maggie Land Blanck Germany, like Ireland, relied on the potato as a food stable and like Ireland was hard hit by the potato famine of the mid 1800s. However, because the Germans did not depend on the potato as exclusively as the Irish did they were not as devastated by the famine as the Irish. Potatoes are still an important element of the German diet. See Potato for other images
